What makes a GREAT removalist?

A truly great removalist is a rare breed. It’s somebody that has a wide range of exceptional qualities, as well as someone who is - let’s face it - a little bit ‘bananas’, allowing them to get through a tough job; day-in and day-out. The qualities required to make a great Sydney removalist aren’t learned. There is no TAFE or university course to qualify as a great removalist. There’s no on-the-job training either. For characteristics such as the ability to keep on smiling throughout a 40 degree day whilst moving a four bedroom home are innate. Found deep within a strong, healthy body, and an even stronger mind. They sure do stand out from the pack though!

Characteristics of a rare breed

Respectful, courteous and humble
A great removalist always gives his best no matter how little sleep he has had, and no matter what might be happening in his own personal life as he understands that his clients needs come first. He smiles through heatwaves, dust storms, heavy rain and freezing winds. He pretends his legs aren’t feeling the long driveways, stair wells and steep slopes. He gets that his client might be having a tough time and will tolerate the effects of stress while remaining polite. When everything inside him is screaming from discomfort or pain, he remains respectful, courteous and humble; hour after hour, day after day, and week after week.

Adventurous, fit and strong
A great removalist has a strong sense of adventure as every day is made up of different people, different requirements and different locations. Nothing ever is the same and he never quite knows what might be waiting for him around each corner. He is fit and strong and doesn’t balk at the piano that wasn’t coming but now is, as well as the lift which decided to stop working an hour into the job - meaning eight flights of stairs need to be handled on foot, and a six hour move will now take 12 - even if he was up with the sun and working at sundown the night before.

Responsible and intelligent
A great removalist can safely drive expensive heavy vehicles that are slow to brake in treacherous Sydney traffic while avoiding any breakages from within a fully loaded truck. He manoeuvres around low hanging electricity wires, tree branches, pot holes and can safely squeeze through incredibly tight access like narrow driveways and inner-city lanes. He calculates how to pack an entire household into the back of a truck in a way that protects his clients items as well as balances the truck. He is a spatial engineer and never looks at a lounge or a fridge for what it is, but assesses how many cubes make up its size, and where in this game of Tetris the item will be best positioned.

Patient, honest and adaptable
A great removalist is patient and can endure sitting in traffic jams or extensive settlement delays which cause havoc to his schedule. He is honest and cares for his clients belongings like they are his own and understands the significance of carrying a family’s lifetime possessions including precious heirlooms which can never be replaced. He is adaptable and watches out for inquisitive, almost invisible children, who are barely higher than his knees, and remembers to check in on the frightened pet to make sure they are coping well.

Charming and positive
A great removalist is always positive and eliminates stress out of every situation and puts his client at ease with his natural charm. He always looks to the bright side even after working 10 hours straight and sometimes well into the darkness.

A handyman
A great removalist is also a handyman and knows that part of his job is removing doors so the awkward lounge will make it through without damaging a wall. He will trim branches to get the truck through a tight spot. He will assemble beds so they can be made up straight away for he knows the family will require a good nights sleep on move day. He will plug in whitegoods and the home theatre system so the family can immediately relax together once he shuts the truck’s doors and drives away.

Safety first
A great removalist is always looking ahead ensuring no one will come to any harm. He looks out for Redbacks under every pot plant, and dog poo which may be lurking on the council strip and quietly waiting to potentially enter the house.

Everyone’s best friend
A great removalist is everyone’s best friend and will keep his co-workers happy on a tough day. He will exceed his clients expectations even if the client has booked with him before, and with each move, they experience even more greatness from him.

Degree in human psyche
A great removalist has seen it all and doesn’t turn his back - messy divorce, births, deaths and most unfortunately, people fleeing their homes under police guard - his degree in human psyche enables him to make everyone feel safe and at ease without judgement.

He is an unsung hero. He only requires a small amount of appreciation, a cold beer or a small tip. He is always remembered even if he goes unacknowledged. He awakes each day never truly knowing what lies ahead but one thing is for certain - he has a very important job to do that only a great removalist can succeed at.

Happy moving,
Vesna & Danny.
